Yandex and IT market in Ukraine

Yandex entered the Ukrainian market in 2005 with the launch of the yandex.ua site with searches on Ukrainian websites, Ukrainian news, exchange rates, weather and a Ukrainian TV program. In 2006 the Yandex Ukraine company was registered. Its first office was opened in Odessa. Ukrainian search engines started to develop. Yandex maps was launched for Ukraine. Yandex traffic jams was the main source of information for Ukrainian taxi drivers regarding congestion in major cities. After the blocking of the Yandex websites in Ukraine, the taxi drivers are now one of the largest professional groups unhappy with the decision of the Ukrainian authorities. However, unlike on the Russian or Belarusian market, Yandex had not ranked first among search engines in Ukraine until the blocking. In April 2017, i.e. until the blocking, over 622% of the online search market in Ukraine was owned by Google. Yandex ranked second with 28%. After blocking Yandex's websites, its position in Ukraine decreased in June to 14.6% in favour of Google, which processed more than 81% of searches on the Ukrainian Internet in June 2017.
