Operation “Olive Branch”

On January 20th, the region of Afrin was attacked by the Turkish army and its supporting militias. The operation is called “Olive Branch” On the one hand, this is a reference to a symbol of peace, on the other – to the olive trees cultivation, which Afrin is famous for. The purpose of the attack is to create a 30-kilometer-long security zone. So far the Turkish army has managed to occupy an area of about five kilometers in Syria. As a result of the ongoing fights and air strikes, at least 2.436 people were killed, including 296 civilians.
