Muharrem İnce has run twice fort he leadership of his party but lost, the last time as recently as January 2018. İnce, who spend his childhood in a village close to the northwestern city of Yalova, is a professor of physics but comes from very modest roots. His father was a truck driver and many members of his family still live in the village. CHP has always been considered as representing the country’s “elite” but, in a twist, Erdoğan called İnce “a poor-fellow”. “We need a president who doesn’t get rich and always remains a poor fellow,” İnce responded.
Muharrem İnce speaks during a rally in Black Sea city of Rize, Erdoğan's bastion and hometwon, with a banner reading "Vakit Tamam" ("The Time is Up") hung on a pedestrian bridge in the background.
