Before the war

Until the 2011 outbreak of the war in Syria, which has claimed the lives of at least 400,000 people, the whole country was controlled by the authorities in Damascus. In 2014 the Kurdish militias were gradually forcing the regime and ISIS forces out of the northern Syria. Currently the so-called Federation of Northern Syria controls between 20 to 30 percent of the country’s territory.
