Pro-Kurdish lawyer Tahir Elci, president of the Diyarbakir Bar Association in southeastern Turkey, was a leading human rights defender. He was killed on November 28, 2015, minutes after making a public statement calling attention to damage done to the 1,500-year-old Four-Legged Minaret Mosque by recent crackdown of Turkish security forces at the historical district of Sur in Diyarbakır.
