As-Sadr City
The district took its name from the Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr, who was murdered along with his two sons by Saddam Hussein regime in 1999. The name of the district was changed from “As-Saura” in 2003, after the American invasion of Iraq, which resulted in the overthrow of Hussein. Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr was the father of Muqtada al-Sadr, a a Shiite cleric who won the elections in May 12, 2018.
