Raqqa

A city in northern Syria. Before the war, it was inhabited by at least 220,000 people. After the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, it was captured by the Free Syrian Army. Later, the opposition ruled Raqqa along with Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian Al-Qaeda fraction, and the militia group of Ahrar ash-Sham. At the beginning of 2014, Raqqa was captured by ISIS. In June 2017, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) entered the city (more information can be found in tag 2), supported by the United States at the head of the international coalition. On October 17, SDF took back Raqqa at the hands of the ISIS fighters. Because of fighting and several thousand bombs dropped from the air, 3,250 people were killed, including 1130 civilians, and most buildings in the city were damaged or destroyed.
