Free Syrian Army (FSA)

A group of loosely affiliated militias which launched armed resistance against the Syrian government in 2011. The lack of coordination and the ambitions of the individual commanders, combined with the lack of clear foreign support, gradually led to the marginalization of the FSA. At the same time, its position was reinforced by groups of jihadists such as the Al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS. Currently some FSA groups are supported by Turkey and fight with the Kurdish people in northern Syria.
