“The Euphrates” Shield was the first Turkey’s major military operation in Syria. It began in August 2016 and it was intended to seize the belt between Afrin and the Euphrates River. Officially, the Turkish authorities said that the main priority is to fight with ISIS, which controlled the localities there. However, many commentators and analysts underlined that the aim was to prevent the creation of a single territory in northern Syria controlled by the Kurds. The Turkey’s attack on Afrin in January 2018 seems to confirm such thesis.
