Ruban has never protested being called a general. In an interview published in August 2014 in Ukrainian Truth he said: “In our SBU academy there was a faculty where negotiators were trained”.
In January 2016, SBU published a statement saying that Ruban is not its representative for liberating the prisoners of war. It also stated that Ruban is not a general of the special forces, either.
