Augusto Pinochet

Chilean dictator and general, leader of military Junta in Chile since 1973. Between 1974 and 1990 he was the President of Chile. During his reign more than three thousand people were murdered and thousands were imprisoned and tortured. He also introduced numerous free market reforms and made Chile grow faster than neighboring countries. In 1990 he peacefully resigned after free presidential elections which took place in 1989. Until 1998 he was the Chief Commander of the Chilean Army. At the time of his death (December 10, 2006) he was accused of numerous financial embezzlements. Learn more here
