al-Hashd al-Shaab (Popular Mobilization Units)
The coalition of over 40 Shia militias was formed in 2014. The Popular Mobilization Units took active part in the fights against ISIS. They units are primarily composed of volunteers. Their influence throughout the country was gradually rising, especially in the south which is inhabited mainly by Shiites.
