Hacking journalism and monetization

24 July 2017

Centrul pentru Jurnalism Independent and Internews organised a hackathon dedicated to journalism and monetisation. Taking place in Chisinau, Moldova it gathered 14 teams which managed to go through the weekend and present its final work.

We are huge fans of such events as they allow to come up, adapt and test new ideas in very short time. Even if solution is not worth pursuing it is still a very valuable insight allowing not to waste time. Even though hackathons usually have love/hate emotions they can bring a lot good to the newsroom. Especially the soft effects are important – building community, linking with mentors, pushing new ideas to the newsrooms.

During the third hackathon organised by CJI the ideas were supposed to help media boost monetisation. At the same time we talked a lot about preserving values. Jakub presented trust model behind Outriders and showed how we embed it into our work.

Members of the jury were Cornelia Cozonac, president of the Journalistic Investigations Center (Moldova); Dona Scola, co-founder of Generator Hub and of DNT Association (Moldova); Dmytro Tuzhanskyi, media expert (Ukraine); Jakub Gornicki, Outriders (Poland); and Razvan Baltaretu, VICE (Romania).

Jury selected three final winners where each received 4000 USD to continue their work on the project:

  • Kreyon,
  • NowTime
  • Di’Art

Good luck on your work and making your projects happen!

Journalism initiatives in Moldova

This was also great time to learn about some interesting journalism projects. We wanted to put on your map two of them.

Group of investigative journalists who push the government to be more transparent. Good energy in the team as we had a pleasure to talk about the work.

Something very close to our heart 🙂 Reporting and multimedia journalism about Moldova. Check them out!
