In 2009, there was a mining disaster, and 20 people lost their lives. It was established in 1968 by merging the Śląsk-Matylda Coal Mine and the new Śląsk Coal Mine. The mine in Kochłowice is one of the most dangerous in Poland. In April 2021,  a quake described as "the biggest in 30 years" happened there, after which two miners were searched. After 67 days, the bodies of the missing ones were finally found.
