May 1 Coal Mine

Silesia

It was built in the years 1952-1960 in Wodzisław Śląski and was the first hard coal mine built entirely in the People's Republic of Poland. In 2001 the mine was finally closed. Today, the University of Humanities and Economics in Łódż owns a large part of the post-mining areas and has its branch there. A municipal indoor swimming pool is also in another part of the post-mining area.

The European Union, associated with the policy of open borders, is currently surrounded by over 2,000 kilometers of border fences.
